Integrating Best Practices at Every Level
This proposal is for a large urban district seeking to slowly restructure their approach to teaching and learning.
Establishing Emergency Education for Syrian Refugees
During the Syrian Civil War over a million refugees arrived in Lebanon. These largely Kurdish students were unfamiliar with the Lebanese education system and had no education in French which is expected for Muslim students in Lebanon. Through a USAID grant-funded partner I compiled a literature review and plan for implementing the Workshop Model for literacy acquisition. The plan integrated socio-emotional learning and Universal Design for Learning to broaden access to the dual language (Arabic/French) curriculum in Lebanon.
A School Start Up in East Africa
The Problem
A new NGO was starting a private magnet school in East Africa. To ensure government cooperation through the licensing process the school had to commit to enrolling a diverse student body. The country has over 90 tribes and languages across 12 large regions as well as several major religions. Students from rural regions tend to be poor and struggle with access to quality primary education and schooling. Simultaneously, the client needed to rapidly develop a curriculum that would be approved by the Ministry of Education.
The Solution
My team developed a plan for student recruitment through marketing and screening. We also created a MEAL plan that ensured the paramenters for enrollment were met. The school was able to fill 100% of seats with students from all 12 regions. 40% of the student body hailed from a rural area. Over 30 languages were represented in the inaugural class.
Agency Compliance with White House Mandate
The Problem
Several years ago Honey Bees and other pollinators were beset by a slew of issues such as Colony Collapse. This threat could have been devistating to the United States food supply. The White House ordered several agencies, including one housed within the Department of Homeland Security to respond to the growing problem. For Agencies within DHS this problem with well outside their usual Congressional Mandate and stakeholders were met with pushback by leaders within other divisions.
The Solution
By contracting out meetings and planning Agency leaders were able to quietly meet the mandate. This approach freed federal employees to continue with their typical tasks. My role was to liase with other members of the federal family working on the issue and then determine a way for my client's portfolio to serve the overal White House plan. My role ended with the articulation of a plan that was accepted by the Executive Office of the President / National Security Council that then becamse Agency protocol.
Helping Struggling Schools and Educators
Scenarios
Stubborn test scores
Low Reading Levels
Curriculum expenditures / curriculum prioritization
Shifting educational mandates
New leadership
Teacher turnover and low moral
Special Education compliance
MTSS/SST/Intervention
Solutions
I primarily devise and implement whole-school turn around plans. Typically, I begin by meeting with school executives and then operational leadership, teachers, students, and even parents. My focus will be to first understand the landscape and then help all stakeholders identify and realize the changes they want to see.
Additionally, I have typically included retreats, professional development (literacy, social studies, special education, intervention, leadership, team-building, etc.), planning sessions, and policy reviews. Other services are possible after we met and discuss your vision.
